Anytime students don’t have their work, I give them a pained look and say in an overly-dramatic tone, “What! That’s like a dagger in my heart!” (Sometimes I change it up to “What! That’s like a machete in my soul!” just for creativity’s sake.)Last Tuesday, one of my juniors didn’t have his reader-response log. The next day, he ran into the workroom during my planning block. “Ms. T! I brought you a Band-Aid,” he said triumphantly. “For what?” He grinned. “For the dagger in your heart, obviously.”
